Michael
Sorg has written over 100 short jazz tunes,
many of them in the 32-bar form of the songs of the
"Great American Songbook," which offer a good
vehicle for improvisation. Many of these are vocal
tunes with original lyrics. Other pieces are
strictly instrumental, allowing the textures of the
melody and harmony to come to the fore. Some of
the tunes are homages to the great tunesmiths of the
past, such as Richard Rogers, George Gershwin,
Antonio Carlos
Jobim and others, and bear some recognizable stamps of these
predecessors.
His jazz pieces touch on various styles of jazz,
including funk and latin.
